Overview
The Orchard District occupies central-northeast Bend, in the corridor often called Midtown. Its boundaries run from Pilot Butte on the east to the BNSF railroad and US-97 Parkway on the west, with Franklin Avenue to the south and Butler Market Road to the north. The neighborhood sits about a mile from downtown, close enough to reach by bike via the NE 6th Street Neighborhood Greenway, which runs from Greenwood Avenue to Butler Market Road with traffic calming and bike-priority markings.
The name traces to a 1930s commercial apple orchard that once stood behind what is now Wagner Mall. The orchard failed but left a warmer microclimate longtime residents call the banana belt, a product of lower elevation and shelter from prevailing winds. Most homes date from the 1950s through the 1970s, a mix of ranches and split-levels on larger-than-average city lots. The Orchard District Neighborhood Association, founded in 1982, notes the area is the most racially diverse neighborhood in Bend.
Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint anchors the east edge, a 114-acre cinder cone donated to the state in 1927 that rises to 4,141 feet with summit views of the Three Sisters, Mount Jefferson, and Mount Hood. Hollinshead Park on NE Jones Road preserves 16.5 acres of a former working ranch, including the historic Hollinshead Barn, a 90-plot community garden run with OSU Extension Master Gardeners, an off-leash dog area, and a canal-side walking path.
