Juniper Preserve sits on 640 acres of high desert northeast of Bend, off Powell Butte Highway, about 20 minutes from downtown. The site is a juniper forest ringed by roughly 20,000 acres of federally protected BLM land, land the resort itself describes as wilderness on every side, so the sightlines run from the fairways straight to Mt. Bachelor and the Three Sisters with no subdivision in between. The residential association, Pronghorn Community Association Inc., registered with the State of Oregon on December 3, 2002, and today collects dues from 969 units spread across the property's four neighborhoods.

Golf is the spine of the place. The Jack Nicklaus Signature Course opened in 2004, the only Nicklaus design in Oregon, playing 7,379 yards from the tips over ancient lava ridges, and it takes public tee times. The Tom Fazio Championship Course followed in 2007 at 7,456 yards, reserved for members and their guests, with a par-3 eighth hole that crosses a 45-foot canyon over an exposed lava tube. Pronghorn is one of only two clubs in the country with a Nicklaus and a Fazio course on the same property. Golf Digest has ranked the Nicklaus course #36 among America's public courses and #6 in Oregon, and named the resort #18 on its list of America's best golf resorts for 2025.

The residential side splits into four neighborhoods, and each one has a different relationship to the golf courses and to the calendar. Four Peaks sits between the Nicklaus and Fazio courses, close to the clubhouse, and its homes can be set up as nightly or short-term rentals, which matters if you're buying a second home rather than a full-time residence. The Estates sit behind a second gate, with views over one course or the other and a quieter, more private feel than the rest of the property. The Residence Club and Residences are three- and four-bedroom townhomes along the 18th hole of the Nicklaus course, sold as whole or partial ownership and fully furnished, built for buyers who want a second home without the year-round upkeep. The Villas sit just east of the Nicklaus course's 17th fairway, built in a Tuscan-inspired style with stone and timber, chef's kitchens, and covered paver patios for outdoor entertaining.

The resort side of the property rebranded from Pronghorn Resort to Juniper Preserve in October 2022 under The Resort Group, the Hawaii-based company that took ownership of Pronghorn from its original developer in February 2012. The rebrand pushed the public-facing side toward wellness and hospitality. The 104-room Juniper Lodge opened in April 2019 and anchors that business, alongside the Juniper Spa, the Trailhead recreation building, and Iris restaurant. The residential HOA kept the older name, Pronghorn Club, so you'll run into both names depending on whether you're looking at the hotel or the neighborhood. Worth knowing before you start reading listings or club paperwork, since they don't always agree with each other.

None of this adds up to a walkable town center. Groceries, a hardware store, or a dentist mean the drive into Bend or the roughly 30-minute drive to Redmond's airport, and day to day life runs on the resort's own dining and shop options unless you're willing to get in the car. Buying a home here does not automatically come with full club privileges, either. The Fazio course specifically is limited to members and their guests, so a buyer who wants to play both courses needs to budget for a club membership on top of the purchase price, not assume it comes with the deed. That is the real cost behind the privacy the Estates and the second gate are built around.
