Overview
Vandevert Ranch sits on 400 acres along both banks of the Little Deschutes River, about 16 miles south of Bend and just south of Sunriver. The land was homesteaded in 1892 by William Plutarch Vandevert, predating the city of Bend and Deschutes County, and operated as a working cattle ranch for nearly a century. The original log homestead and one-room schoolhouse survive on the property and are listed among Deschutes County's Historic Resources.
In 1988, Jim and Carol Gardner purchased and restored the homestead, converting the ranch into a gated residential community of roughly 22 custom homesites. Design guidelines require log, timber, and stone construction. The homeowners association holds about 350 acres of common land, including meadows, river frontage, a private fishing pond, and equestrian facilities.
