It sits in south-central Deschutes County, south of Sunriver and north of La Pine, just west of U.S. Route 97. The community is part of the Bend metropolitan area and shares the 97707 zip code with neighboring Sunriver.

The area takes its name from the rivers that run through it. The Deschutes and Little Deschutes rivers join within the community, with the Little Deschutes passing through the eastern side and the Deschutes through the west. The Spring River, a short spring-fed river in the north, joins the Deschutes from the west. That river network is the reason many homes here come with water frontage and direct access to the Deschutes.

Three Rivers covers about 7.5 square miles at an elevation near 4,187 feet. It is surrounded by the Deschutes National Forest, and the residential lots sit among ponderosa and lodgepole pines. The forested setting and larger lot sizes give the community a quieter feel than the planned resort layout of nearby Sunriver.

The population was 3,925 at the 2020 census, up from 3,014 in 2010 and 2,445 in 2000. Housing here ranges from cabins and single-level homes to riverfront properties, and the community draws both full-time residents and second-home owners who want room between neighbors and proximity to the water.
