Overview
Southwest Bend is bounded by Powers Road to the north, the Deschutes River to the west, 3rd Street to the east, and the city limits to the south. The City of Bend recognized it in December 2001, making it the first neighborhood district established in the city. The area sits next to the Old Mill District, a 270-acre mixed-use development on the former Shevlin-Hixon and Brooks-Scanlon lumber-mill site, now home to roughly 60 retailers and the 8,000-seat Hayden Homes Amphitheater on the west bank of the Deschutes.
Housing spans a wide range of eras, with a share of homes from the 1970s through 1990s and the majority built after 1999 as the city grew following the timber industry's decline. The result is a mix of established ranch homes, newer single-family construction, and townhomes, many on lots that back to the Deschutes River Trail corridor.
SW Century Drive runs through the neighborhood and becomes the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway heading west, reaching Mount Bachelor in about 22 miles. The Bend Whitewater Park sits at the district's northern edge on the Deschutes at SW Shevlin Hixon Drive, with three river channels for kayaking, paddleboarding, and floating. Schools serving the area include Elk Meadow Elementary (60880 Brookswood Blvd) and Summit High School.
