Neighborhood
Summit West is one of thirteen neighborhood districts the City of Bend formally recognizes, and it is the youngest of them. The district sits in the northwest corner of the city, running from River West along Shevlin Park Road out to the edge of Deschutes National Forest land, where the paved street grid stops and gravel Forest Service roads pick up. It covers 1,553 acres across 48 subdivisions, from Northwest Quad, the smallest, to NorthWest Crossing, the largest. Downtown Bend is about 10 minutes away by car via Mt. Washington Drive to Newport Avenue. Inside the district, Bend Park and Recreation District counts 64 acres of neighborhood parks and 15 miles of trail, and both numbers roughly double once Shevlin Park is added in.
Two of the core neighborhoods trace back to the same family's land, sold off a generation apart. In 1999, the Tennant Family Limited Partnership and Brooks Resources Corporation bought roughly 487 acres from the Miller family and built NorthWest Crossing, selling the first lots by lottery in 2001 and finishing the first homes in 2002. Fifteen years later, a separate piece of Miller land, bought by Bill Miller in 1955 from a sheep rancher who had owned it since the 1920s, became The Tree Farm: 533 acres split into fifty two-acre homesites wrapped around more than 400 acres of preserved forest. In August 2017, Brooks Resources transferred 328 of those preserved acres to Bend Park and Recreation District, folding them into Shevlin Park.
