Neighborhood
Living on a golf course five miles from downtown Bend means something different than living on one fifteen or twenty miles out. Widgi Creek sits on SW Century Drive, the road that becomes the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway and carries traffic toward Mt. Bachelor. Ponderosa pine covers the property on the town side, and the Deschutes River Canyon cuts along its edge on the other. The elevation runs close to 3,900 feet, a few hundred feet above the valley floor where most of Bend sits, which is part of why the pine cover here reads heavier than it does closer to the river downtown.
Golf arrived on this stretch of forest in 1991, one of a wave of Central Oregon courses that opened that year as the region's golf-destination era took hold. The course first went by a different name, Seventh Mountain Golf Village, before it became Widgi Creek Golf Club. Robert Muir Graves routed it. Graves spent close to fifty years designing golf courses across the American West, served a term as president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects in the mid-1970s, and had already built the Big Meadow course at Black Butte Ranch nineteen years earlier, in 1972. He died in Bend in 2003, so Widgi Creek is one of the last courses he saw built close to home.
