What was here before the gated community? A working cattle ranch, for the better part of a century. William Plutarch Vandevert homesteaded on the Little Deschutes River in 1892, on land that predates both the city of Bend and Deschutes County itself. The ranch sits about 15 miles south of Bend and roughly 2 miles from Sunriver, its elevation running from 4,160 feet near the river to 4,180 feet at the entrance gate. Vandevert was born in 1854 near Cottage Grove, Oregon. He married Sadie Vincheller in 1880 and raised eight children on the ranch, three of whom became doctors. He lived on the ranch until his death in 1944, two days after his ninetieth birthday.
The ranch ran cattle under the Hashknife brand, which Vandevert had used years earlier as a range foreman for the Aztec Land and Cattle Company in Arizona and Texas. The brand originated with Texas cattle camp cooks in the 1870s, cut in the shape of the knife they used to chop hash. The homestead doubled as a U.S. post office and a stagecoach stop in its early years. Nearby, the one-room Harper School, built in 1925 and moved to its current spot on the ranch in 1929, taught Vandevert children and their neighbors' kids until it closed for good in the 1950s. Both the log homestead and the schoolhouse still stand, restored, and the homeowners association's own history places them among the sites Deschutes County recognizes as historic. The family kept living on the ranch through three generations. Claude Vandevert, William's son, sold the 320 acres in 1970, though he kept the right to live out his life there with his wife.
