Neighborhood
Broken Top sits on Bend's west side, where the pine forest of the Cascade foothills meets the high desert. The gated community was established in 1992 and takes its name from the mountain, a 9,177-foot stratovolcano about 20 miles west in the Three Sisters Wilderness. From the golf course, the peak that gave the community its name is part of the view, alongside South Sister and Mt. Bachelor. The 18-hole championship course, designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, opened for play on July 4, 1993.
The club changed hands in October 2019. Eighty-four percent of the community's 645 homeowners at the time voted to buy the club from Gold Ring Holdings, moving ownership to the Broken Top Community Association, which now contracts with Troon to run day-to-day operations. That history is worth knowing before you assume a home purchase here includes club access. Golf membership is sold separately from the HOA and is also sold to people who live outside the neighborhood, so buying a house does not put you on the course, in the restaurant, or in the fitness center automatically. What residency and HOA dues do buy is the shared ground around the club: 11 miles of paved paths, a six-acre lake stocked with rainbow trout, and the setting around the 27,000-square-foot clubhouse, open to residents whether or not they carry a membership.
