Neighborhood
Sunriver sits 15 miles south of Bend on the east bank of the Deschutes River, on land that started out as Camp Abbot, a U.S. Army combat engineer training post built in 1942 and torn down by 1944 once the war effort moved on. Developers John Gray and Donald McCallum bought the former Army tract in 1965 and picked the name Sunriver. The first condominiums and the original lodge opened in 1968, Skidmore, Owings and Merrill finished the master plan in 1969, and the Sunriver post office opened that July. The community sits on the grounds of the former Shonquest Ranch.
Roughly 4,200 homesites make up the 3,300-acre plan, split between single-family homes, condominiums, and cabins. The 2020 Census counted 2,023 full-time residents, up from 1,393 in 2010 and 1,393 in 2000, a 45 percent jump in a decade. Most homesites still turn over to guests and second-home owners the rest of the year. A lot of your neighbors will not be around most weeks, and the community's rhythm follows the resort calendar more than a typical residential street would.
