Neighborhood
Black Butte Ranch sits eight miles northwest of Sisters, Oregon, on 1,800 acres at 3,376 feet in the eastern Cascade foothills, bordered on several sides by Deschutes National Forest. Black Butte, the 6,436-foot cinder cone the ranch takes its name from, rises just to the northeast. The land was cattle range before it was a resort. Stewart Lowery, a San Francisco businessman, bought the property in the mid-1930s and gave it the Black Butte Ranch name. Howard Morgan, a former Oregon Public Utility Commissioner, owned it through the 1960s, then sold it in 1969 to Brooks Resources Corporation, a Central Oregon timber company branching into recreational development. Brooks took full title in January 1970 and started building. It was the company's first project in the region.
The first homeowners moved in during 1971, the same year the ranch got its own post office. Brooks Resources ran the development through the 1970s, then handed the roads, bike paths, and common areas to the homeowners association in 1982. Five years later, in 1987, the association bought the two golf courses and the Lodge outright, and it has owned and operated the whole resort since. Brooks also shaped the town of Sisters at the same time, offering local merchants free architectural help and no-interest loans in the 1970s to adopt the Western storefront look that still defines Sisters' downtown today. Of the 1,251 homesites platted across the ranch, about 20 remain undeveloped.
