Neighborhood
Orchard District sits in central-northeast Bend, in the area residents and the city call Midtown. The neighborhood association's own map draws the boundary from Pilot Butte on the east to the BNSF railroad and the US-97 Parkway on the west, with Franklin Avenue as the south edge and Butler Market Road as the north. That puts most of the neighborhood about a mile from downtown, close enough that the NE 6th Street Neighborhood Greenway, one of Bend's first, carries cyclists and walkers the length of the district from Greenwood Avenue to Butler Market Road on calmed streets with speed humps and marked crossings instead of a painted bike lane on a busy arterial.
The name comes from a real, failed business rather than a marketing flourish. In the 1930s, growers planted a commercial apple orchard on the land now behind Wagner Mall, betting that the area's slightly lower elevation and its shelter from Bend's prevailing wind would keep frost off the trees through more of the season. The commercial orchard did not survive, but the warmer pocket of air it was built on did, and longtime residents still call it the banana belt. A handful of buildings from that era, including the orchard's original farmhouse and its office, are still standing and still lived in today. Most of the housing around them came later. Ranches and split-levels went up through the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, on lots that run larger than Bend's average. Because the neighborhood grew up house by house over four decades rather than as a single platted subdivision, the housing stock is a real mix of eras and conditions, not a matched set from one builder.
