Bend is a small city with a large park system, a ski hill on the edge of town, and four seasons that each ask something different of a household with children. This guide is the practical side: what the parks district runs, how schools are assigned, what winter does to the calendar, and where to look for child care. Every figure names its source. It does not recommend neighborhoods, and it does not rate anything.
Parks, trails, and the pool
The Bend Park and Recreation District, a separate taxing district from the city, maintains 86 parks and open spaces, more than 90 miles of trail, and more than 3,600 acres, per its own site. It runs youth sports leagues in baseball, soccer, basketball, and volleyball, and swim lessons and recreation swims at Juniper Swim and Fitness Center, two facilities with five pools. The Deschutes River Trail runs through the middle of town, and Drake Park and Shevlin Park are the two most used by people with kids in tow. Registration for district programs runs through its site, and popular sessions fill.
Schools
Bend is served by Bend-La Pine Schools, which lists 17 elementary schools, two K-8 magnets, seven middle schools, six high schools, an online school, and a transition program, with 16,530 students in the Oregon Department of Education's fall 2025 count. The school assigned to a home is a fact about its address, found on the county's DIAL lookup at dial.deschutes.org, and boundaries change as schools open. Charter and private options, with their posted tuition, and the districts around Bend are in Schools in Central Oregon. The 2026-27 year starts September 9 to 11 on a staggered schedule.

Oregon's child care referral agency for Deschutes, Crook, and Jefferson counties is NeighborImpact Child Care Resources, which keeps the list of licensed providers and helps with the search. Waitlists are common for infant and toddler care. Start the search when you start the home search, not when you arrive. We do not publish a slot count because the state's licensing dashboard is the only current source and it is a live tool, not a number we can stamp with a date.
Winter
January's average low in Bend is 24 degrees and the annual precipitation normal is 9.11 inches, per NOAA's 1991 to 2020 station normals, so winter is cold, dry, and sunny more often than people expect. Snow closes schools a few days most years and makes side streets a drive. Mt. Bachelor is about 21 miles from downtown by road. Its Mighty Mites program takes skiers at ages 4 and 5 and snowboarders at 5 and 6 in a multi-week format, and its kids group lessons run for ages 7 to 12, per the resort's site. Sledding hills, the Nordic center, and the tubing park are the other winter routine.
Summer
July's average high is 82 degrees by the same NOAA normals, and the river is the town pool. Floating the Deschutes through the Old Mill District, the parks district's summer camps, youth sports, and the trailheads on the west side fill the calendar. Libraries and the rest
Deschutes Public Library runs six branches: Central in Bend, Downtown Bend, which is closed for a remodel until summer 2027, La Pine, Redmond, Sisters, and Sunriver. The High Desert Museum south of town and the Bend Science Station are the two indoor standbys. Cascades East Transit runs fixed bus routes in the city, and most of the town is a short drive.
