Neighborhood
Eagle Crest sits on 1,700 acres of high desert six miles west of downtown Redmond on Cline Falls Highway, climbing the east slopes of Cline Buttes above the Deschutes River canyon at 3,622 feet of elevation. It is a designated destination resort under Oregon's land use program, one of eight in the state, the legal mechanism that let a resort and residential community get built on rural land outside any city's growth boundary. Redmond's airport, Roberts Field, is a short drive northeast. Bend's Old Mill District is a straight run down US-97 to the south. Neither is a walk. Groceries, a hardware store, a pharmacy, all of it means getting in a car.
The resort broke ground in 1985 as a gated community of homesites, condominiums, and townhouses on the east side of Cline Falls Highway. A second phase opened in 1996 on the west side, built around the Ridge golf course, which had been completed in 1993. A third phase followed northwest of Cline Butte, adding six more subdivisions. Ownership has changed hands more than once since. Jeld-Wen, the Klamath Falls window and door manufacturer, developed and ran the resort originally. Northview Hotel Group bought it in 2010 with financing from Oaktree Capital Management. KDG Capital, a Florida investment firm, bought it again in 2018 and turned day-to-day hotel operations over to Aimbridge Hospitality. The homeowners associations that govern individual streets are separate from whoever owns the hotel side, but the golf courses, the lodge, and the conference center answer to that owner, not to the neighbors, and that owner has changed three times in forty years.
